Why the sand is actually pink
The color is biology, not marketing. Red foraminifera — microscopic single-celled sea creatures with bright pink-to-red shells, of the kind best known as Homotrema rubrum — live on the reef offshore. When they die, the surf grinds their shells into fragments and washes them ashore, mixing red dust into white coral sand. The result: three-plus miles of blush that gets stronger at the waterline and in low light. Midday sun washes it out; the first two hours after sunrise, and golden hour, are when the beach really performs.

Getting there
Fly into North Eleuthera (ELH). A taxi runs you ~5 minutes to Three Island Dock ($5–10/person), water taxis cross to Harbour Island continuously until about 9pm ($5–7/person, no booking needed), and Dunmore Town's golf-cart lanes take you to the beach in another five minutes. Door to door from the runway: usually under 25 minutes. Coming from mainland Eleuthera on a day trip, it's the same dock — which makes Pink Sands one of the easiest world-famous beaches anywhere to reach.
When to go
Sunrise. The beach faces east over the Atlantic, so first light hits it straight on — pink at its most saturated, and you'll share three miles with almost nobody. Walk near the waterline where the wet sand holds the color. Peak season is December–March; April–May and September–October bring the same beach with fewer people and lower prices. Even in peak weeks it rarely feels crowded — there's simply too much beach.
Dunmore Town, the Lone Tree, and the rest of the island
Harbour Island packs a lot into three miles: pastel colonial cottages in Dunmore Town (the Bahamas' first capital), the famous Lone Tree — a hurricane-delivered driftwood trunk standing on the harbour-side flats at Girls Bank, best at low tide — and a beachfront row of storied hotels (Pink Sands Resort, Coral Sands, The Dunmore, all directly on the pink sand and all operating in 2026, with Coral Sands making Condé Nast Traveler's 2026 Gold List). Pink sand without the water taxi
Mainland Eleuthera has its own pink: French Leave Beach in Governor's Harbour is the signature stretch (over a mile, reef-tempered swimming, Tippy's on the sand), with quieter Poponi next door and wild Jack's Bay in the deep south. One honest correction to the blogs: Lighthouse Beach is mostly white-powder sand with pink-streaked cliffs — spectacular, but not the pink-sand poster child some posts claim.
