🎣Foreign vessels need a Sport Fishing Permit, issued at Customs on arrival · hook & line only · unlimited rods aboard but max six in use at once
🐠Vessel bag limits: 18 pelagics (mahi, wahoo, kingfish, tuna — any combination) · 60 lbs or 20 demersal fish (grouper, snapper), whichever is less · 6 legal conch · 10 lobster in season
🐟Bonefish & permit: fishing the flats legally requires a separate Flats/Fly license (age 12+), a Bahamian-certified guide for two or more anglers, and a Bahamian-registered boat — booking a local captain handles all of this for you
🦞Crawfish (spiny lobster): closed Apr 1 – Jul 31 — closed right now, reopens Aug 1 · legal size 3¼" carapace or 5½" tail · egg-bearing females always off-limits
🐚Conch: 6 per vessel allowed if the shell has a well-formed flaring lip — not banned for visitors, despite what some older guides say
🦈Sharks: fully protected since 2011 — no targeted shark fishing, any shark hooked must be released unharmed
🐟Nassau grouper: closed season Dec 1 – end of Feb — open right now. Black & gag grouper aren't covered by this specific closure.
🔱Spearfishing: Hawaiian sling or pole spear only, never a speargun — needs written authorization on your permit · not within 200 yds of any Out Island shoreline · no scuba or air compressors, ever
🚫Billfish (marlin, sailfish, swordfish) must be released outside sanctioned tournaments · turtles cannot be taken or possessed, ever
💰Selling or trading any catch as a visitor is treated as illegal commercial fishing — zero tolerance

🔱Legal gear: Hawaiian sling or pole spear, endorsed in writing on your Sport Fishing Permit — ask for it when the permit is issued. Spearguns are illegal to even possess in The Bahamas
🤿Free-diving only — using scuba or any air compressor to take fish, conch, crawfish or any marine life is prohibited, full stop
📍Stay 200+ yards off any Out Island shoreline (that's all of Eleuthera) · 1 mile off New Providence and south Grand Bahama · never inside national sea parks
🦁Lionfish: invasive — no limit, no season, removal actively encouraged. Venomous spines stay dangerous after death: spear it, snip the spines, eat well
🦞Crawfish may legally be taken by hand or sling — in season only. Reopens Aug 1, and Eleuthera's reefs will be crawling. Size rules apply, egg-bearing females always off-limits
🎯Top targets on the sling: hogfish, mutton & mangrove snapper, grouper outside the Nassau closure. Leave parrotfish alone — they keep the reef alive
⚠️Speared fish bleed — get them on a stringer away from your body and out of the water fast. Sharks are protected here, and they know exactly what a sling means. Never dive alone
